The Betrayal, a new novel, will be published by Fig Tree in April 2010

Leningrad in 1952, a city recovering from war. Andrei, a hospital doctor, and Anna, a nursery teacher, are forging a life together. They try to avoid coming to the attention of the authorities, but their private happiness is precarious. Stalin is still in power, and when Andrei has to treat the seriously-ill child of a senior secret police officer, he and Anna are caught  in a web of betrayal.

'The Betrayal is a beautifully written and deeply moving story about fear, loss, love and honesty amid the demented lies of Stalin's last days. I literally could not put it down.'  Antony Beevor

Welcome

Welcome. I hope that this website will give you the information you need about my books, other work that I’ve been doing and forthcoming events, as well as links to relevant websites. There is information about all my published work, with outlines, extracts and reviews, as well as news about forthcoming publications.

Because I work in several genres, some readers may know my novels but not my poetry, or be familiar with my writing for children but not my work for adults. For this reason I’ve included extracts from my novels and books for children, as well as a some complete short stories, a selection of poems and an essay. I hope that these will give some sense of my writing as a whole. The poems and stories on the website will change from time to time, as I update it.
